About The Station
The station is powered by a LaCrosse 2310 weather station. The data is collected every 5 seconds and the site is updated every 15 minutes. This site and its data is collected using Weather Display Software. The station comprises an anemometer, rain gauge and a thermo-hygro sensor situated in optimal positions for highest accuracy possible. The Thermo/Hygro unit is shielded from Solar Radiation with a Stevenson Shield that exceeds the minimum CWOP specifications.
About The Location
This station is located in Cobblestone Farms, Maricopa, Arizona. Coordinates are N33.07, W112.04, and the elevation is 1148ft. The station is influenced by the wide open spaces of nearby Indian Reservations and the associated farms, and often the temperatures recorded are 2 or 3 degrees different to those recorded in a developed area. North is the Gila River Indian Reservation. To the west, south and a little to the east is the Ak Chin Reservation and the associated farms. The city is surrounded by open spaces, with the Estrella Mountains to the W - WNW. Several miles north is the Gila (heela) river. It's very similar to the Todd River in Alice Springs, NT, Australia, in that both are dry beds, with water flow ocurring only rarely.
Maricopa is a rural town, located about 45 miles or so SSW of the Phoenix Area. Its main artery is Arizona SR347. It is surrounded on 3 sides by the Reservations and the Reservation's Farms. Until about 4 years ago, it was a quiet little place, a haven of quiet, clean country living. That's changed.
The City incorporated in 2003, and has undergone a home building effort at frantic speed. Currently there are more houses under construction than there are completed homes, but every day another family makes Maricopa home. It is a blossoming bedroom community for the Phoenix Area, with an estimated 16,000 new residents forecast for each year, 2007, 2008. Despite the rapid growth, and the rapid growth of the businesses to support the increasing population, it is still a rural area (per US Post Office) and certain things confirm this... Coyotes howling in the distance... Wild horses frolicking in either Dawn or Dusk, sometimes both. Oh yes, snakes and scorpions are some of our desert wildlife.
Far enough away from the Phoenix area, it's not affected by the Metro Heat Island effect, in which the heat bubble of the metro area has forced a small climate change; Maricopa still gets hot temperatures in the summer (hey, it's a desert), but it also cools down a few more degrees in the evening and the cooler seasons. All in all, it's a pleasant place to live.
